It is no secret that in the past three decades people are living longer, more productive lives. Advancement in health care and treatment of illnesses have resulted in a marked increase of senior citizens and elderly amongst the general population ranks. Oftentimes, however, as a person ages they gradually become less able to take care of some of the basic responsibilities of running a household and caring for themselves. Therefore, other family members must step in and take on responsibilities for them, but not without consequence.
A recent study of employers by the National Family Caregiver association reports that individuals who provide care for elderly family members suffer decreased productivity in their professional/work life and are therefore often overlooked for promotions and special projects. For example, the study found that:
60% of employees, who care for their loved ones are late for work, skip lunches and often must leave early to provide care
19% are forced to decline promotions, business trips or special projects
11% must take leave of absences
5 - 17% must change jobs or reduce hours
Logic further indicates that there would be a similar impact on other family responsibilities and recreation.
